Where to grab a tarot reading and a drink in Toronto

THE TIP JAR__things to do while drinking__

By Kait Fowlie | @kait_fowlie

What was once an underground subculture — even considered scary or inaccessible — is quickly becoming a global phenomenon. Tarot has made its way into bookstores, boutiques and yes, bars, in Toronto. This is great news for everyone, not just the mystic-minded, if you ask me. Tarot opens up an avenue for connection and synchronicity, which we all could use a little more of right now.

Resident tarot-reader at The Drake Hotel, Niki Boghossian, says: “It’s an amazing opportunity to stop and connect with someone on a really personal level that you would probably never speak to in day-to-day life. It’s these wonderful little moments of connection with total strangers that are super unique. It opens you up to realizing ‘Right, everyone’s got their shit. It’s ok we can all get through this together.’”

As heavy matters in life are best consulted over with some humour, getting a tarot reading at a bar is an opportunity to give our problems— and “our fate” over to someone else for a while, and do it with the support of some high-proof spirits. Ready to indulge your tarot curiosity? Do it at one of these spots in the city this spring…

Southern Accent

Tarot Tuesdays are a long-time tradition at Southern Accent, where Cajun and Creole come together to bring an authentic New Orleans vibe to the city. This spot was a mainstay on Mirvish Street since 1984 before it relocated to College and Ossington, but you can still pull up a stool at their original Zydecco Bar and get your cards read by resident card-slinger Jessie Arora. Get comfy with a signature Jim Beam Bourbon Sour and no news will be bad news. Call ahead of time for a dinner or bar reservation and book your appointment.

The Drake Hotel

The city’s “hot bed for culture” leaves no trend unincorporated into their mix. Tarot, included. The Drake’s resident tarot card reader Niki Boghossian, who’s also a server at the Drake Commissary, gives readings here on Tarot Tuesdays from 6 to 9pm. Come early and sign up for a 15-minute reading in the lounge. Splurge on a La Boheme, an infusion of Tequila, Campari, absinthe, and charred pineapple syrup to help expand your mind.
