The Curious Creature’s favourite places in Toronto

April 20, 2019

If it's a happening event in Toronto, it's a good bet you'll find Solmaz (aka, The Curious Creature) there, posting play-by-play to her Instagram feed. She also covers the world. And since we run into her just about every week, we asked her to tell us some of her favourite places to hang out.

What's your coffee shop of choice?
Sam James Coffee Bar near Trinity Bellwoods.

Hotel lobby?
Four Seasons Toronto. Most hotel lobbies are chaotic, but this lobby is incredibly serene. I love the soaring ceilings, intricate mahogany panels and gorg(eous) dandelion sculptures.

Summer's coming. Where's the best ice cream?
Love all the classics (Ed's, Summer's, Greg's), but gelato has my heart. My favourite is Bar Ape right now.

OK. Brunch spot?
Oh, tough one! Maha's, Baddies, Mildred's and the Royal brunch at Louix Louis are my current faves. I loved the brunch at Ufficio, but unfortunately they've put brunch on hold for now.

Where do you go for cocktails?
Bar Raval. Amazing drinks, food and atmosphere. [Editor's note: Bar Raval was just named No. 1 bar in Canada by Canada's 100 Best.]

Favourite architecture in the city?
Galleria Italia at the AGO. A stunning space created by Frank Gehry.

When it's time for fancy dinner, where?
Alo. If you can land a table! [Editor's note: Alo was just named No. 1 restaurant in Canada by Canada's 100 Best. Full disclosure: This interview was completed before these awards were announced last Monday.]

And just hanging out...?
Trinity Bellwoods, especially during spring and summer.
