Tsantali Rapsani Reserve
Rapsani, Greece, 2013
$20.95 Vintages 734855
If you still haven’t gotten around to trying Greek wines, you need to make it your 2018 resolution. This blend of indigenous red grapes Xinomavro, Krassato and Stavroto offers so much in brooding satisfaction: firm and powerful, with generous notes of ripe black berry, rich earth, woodsy smoke, black pepper and black licorice. A lively backbone of acidity keeps things from getting too decadent.
Pair with: Shepherd’s pie
Clos du Bois “Calcaire” Chardonnay
Russian River Valley, California
$29.95 Vintages 421941
Named for the calcareous soils that loan that intriguing flinty-mineral note to top quality Chardonnay. This is a very impressive example coming out of California, showing leaner, focused notes of peach, candied lemon peel, sweet cream and light toast. Silky and buoyant, oak is judicious and done with a deft touch. Well done.
Pair with: Seared scallops
Moutard Père & Fils Grand Cuvée Brut
Champagne, France NV
$39.95 Vintages 400432
Yuo don’t often see Champers this affordable – especially ones as pretty and easy drinking as this. Lemon pastry, green apple, and rocky mineral flavours on the energetic and lively palate.
Pair with: Shrimp tempura
That’s the Spirit
Los Arango Reposado Tequila, $50.15
Thought tequila was a summer thing? Shame on you. Reposados are aged in oak casks for up to a year, which gives these fiery spirits a bit of time to mellow out. The best ones result in caramel-y, toasty, vanilla-y notes, like this one herre
Try in: Winter Margarita
Hop City “Cheat Day” Black Forest Porter $3.25, 473mL can
You are a full five days into your New Year’s Resolution. Time to get off that wagon! Plus it’s cold af outside, so for the good of your own health, get something hearty and warming into you. At 5.7% abv, this seasonal brew will do the trick. Made with pure sour cherry juice imported from Germany, it’s a tasty little number, too.
