Toronto’s best bars, Momofuku, Taste Toronto and Wine School
—SHAKEN & STIRRED: News from Drink Toronto—
TORONTO’S BEST BARS: Canada’s 100 Best Restaurants has just revealed its much-anticipated list of the best dining experiences across the country, along with a ranking of Canada’s 50 Best Bars. Topping the list is College Street’s Bar Raval, one of our favourite spots for a tipple, where bartending ace Ana Wolkowski reins over an expert team crafting classic, seasonal and Spanish-vibe cocktails (think: fino sherry, Cava, etc.) that are truly mind-blowing. Another favourite to make the Top 50, and one of the spots we visit on the Toronto Cocktail Trail, is the super-cute PrettyUgly Bar (No. 8), managed by expert of all things cocktail Evelyn Chick. One of our favourite wine bars, Archive 909 on Dundas Street West, also made the list at No. 18. Archive is run by the charming and infinitely knowledgeable Joshua Corea, who hosts our tour guests with fantastic and interesting wines (most recently a magnum from Beaujolais and an aged red from Georgia – the country, not the state). And then there’s our other favourite wine bar, the newly opened Paris Paris (No. 47) on Dundas West, where Grape Witch Krysta Oben performs sommelier sorcery with some of the most interesting wines you’ll ever see (especially at such reasonably prices). On our most recent tour, she poured a remarkable Greek white wine that was so good, it transformed one of our guests from a die-hard red-wine drinker. Congratulations to all of the Toronto bars on the Top 50 list: The Bar at Alo (No. 5), Gift Shop at Ossington (No. 11), Cold Tea (No. 15), Cocktail Bar (No. 19), Birreira Volo (No. 23), The Shameful Tikki Room (No. 26), Côte de Boeuf (No. 27), Rush Lane & Co. (No. 28), Civil Liberties (No. 30), Burdock (No. 31), Midfield Wine Bar & Tavern (No. 33), Mahjong Bar (No. 35), d | bar (No. 36), BarChef (No. 40) and The Drake (No. 41).
GET NOODLED: Momofuku Toronto is ch-ch-ch-changing… just a little bit. The ground-floor Noodle Bar has expanded to the encompass the second floor while a brand-new concept is going into the third floor, where the Shoto used to be, later this spring. Follow Momofuku’s Instagram for updates.
TORONTO TASTE: Tickets for the 2018 edition of Toronto Taste, the annual restaurant and drink event that raises money for the esteemed charity Second Harvest, are now on sale. You’ll want to act fast, as tickets always sell out. You can also help this worthy cause by buying a raffle ticket for some crazy-amazing prizes, like a luxurious escape for two to Rome, a dream vacation to Tulum, a Chef-at-Home experience with Chef Matt Basile (Fidel Gastro’s) and All-Clad Canada… and much more! (Oh my.)
WINE SCHOOL: We’ve been overwhelmed by the positive response to Wine School, presented by Drink Toronto, Toronto Life and The Wine Sisters. The first two editions of the school — each with 5 classes running on consecutive Tuesday nights — sold out in a matter of days. So we’re hard at work on Wine School 3, along with some other fun summer wine/beer/cocktail tasting opportunities. To be the first in the know, sign up to receive our new bi-weekly magazine.
