5 cool things to make your Victoria Day weekend
Wishing all our friends a safe, happy and delicious Victoria Day weekend. Here a few Drink Toronto-endorsed things to do, drink and taste. Also, a TV show you won't want to miss!
Summer wines on CTV's The Social with our very own Erin Henderson
Catch Erin on CTV's The Social this Friday at 1 p.m. for some tips on great summer wines (and other secrets). Erin will reveal a few choice wines to enjoy now that the weather is becoming normal. And we've invented a game to play while watching the show: every time Erin says "wine," take a swig of rosé. That'll get your weekend started right. If you miss the show, you can watch it online here. And we'll post a list of her wines and other secrets on our blog next week. Or, come to Wine School next Tuesday — class is all about stocking your summer cellar. And she'll be signing autographs.
Barchef Project Toasted Old Fashioned
This cocktail in a bottle is so good... so good! You'll want to grab a few bottles to take to the cottage, back yard, or easy chair. This pure spirit is a blend of Ontario-made whiskey, herbs and spices, and maple syrup. That's it. Just add a big hunk of ice and maybe an orange slice and you're ready to go. Find it in the whiskey section at the LCBO or — our favourite place — right by the cash. [Note: You can always pop in at Barchef on Queen West and ask Frankie to make you one on the spot.]
El Rey Mezcal Bar
The patio is open at Kensington Market's El Rey, where the mezcal, guac and tacos flow all day long. A new prix-fixe lunch is now in effect (Tuesday to Friday from noon to 4 p.m.). For $15.95, you get a three-course lunch with choice of tacos. The crispy squid is outstanding, the smoky chicken is incredible and the pork is out of this world. For dessert, don't miss the tres leches cake — sponge cake with coconut, pineapple agave strawberries and crema.
Flat Rock Twisted White
We love the name and we love the winery. This is a white wine blend that's just made for summer. It's fruity, vibrant, fresh and a little too easy-drinking. It has just a hint of sweetness — but don't worry it's all in balance. Serve well chilled with salty snacks or a white pizza. Best of all... Flat Rock Twisted is $2 off at the LCBO!
Seasonal goodies at Rodney's Oysterhouse
There's lots of fresh-from-the-ocean seasonal goodies at Rodney's on King West this weekend, including — all of these are live — softshell crab, spot prawns from British Columbia and gooseneck barnacles. If you've never had a gooseneck barnacle, which is one of the rarest of rare sea treats, get yourself to Rodney's post haste. Grab a glass of Sea Legs white wine (made exclusively for Rodney's by Cave Spring Cellars in Niagara) and tuck in. And a heads up that the East Coast Lobster Supper is coming up on Thursday, May 30, with music, drinks, debauchery and lots of stuff from the sea. (Sorry, we can't guarantee the debauchery, but it's quite likely.)
